ƛƇƬƖƔƛƬƖƠƝ &ƛƇƬƖƔƖƧM: BECOMING AN AGENT OF CHANGE

September 12, 2017

In light of recent events (i.e. the natural disasters rampant throughout our planet right now, that are occurring at historically unprecedented magnitude) and in alignment with my intention to use this blog as a forum to inspire others to become agents of change, I want to share with you all some avenues for getting involved in activism &activating your role as the stewards of this planet..

It is no secret that industrialization is wreaking havoc on nature. Climate change is real.

&Though we certainly cannot stop a natural disaster from occurring, there are many ways we CAN work together to prevent the degradation of our planet.

As I shared in my previous post, I spent my undergraduate studying cultures and the way in which they interact with and effect their environments and subsequently their ecosystems. Part of my work as an Anthropologist also took me to South America, where I lived with and researched members of a tribal community in Amazonian Ecuador back in 2013.

My deep vested interested in the rainforest lead me to a group called The Pachamama Alliance, who I have worked with on and off since college.

The Pachamama Alliance is "a global community that offers people the chance to learn, connect, engage, travel and cherish life for the purpose of creating a sustainable future that works for all. With roots deep in the Amazon rainforest, our programs integrate indigenous wisdom with modern knowledge to support personal, and collective, transformation that is the catalyst to bringing forth an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, socially just human presence on this planet".

Earlier this year, I took a 7 week online course hosted by the Pachamama Alliance ("The Gamechanger Intensive"). This course served to re-inspire me as to how I can BE THE CHANGE.

It covered topics such as climate change, reducing our carbon footprints, being a well informed consumer and using our purchasing power as a vote, verifying whether products we are consuming are ethically sourced, and how to engage in the political sphere.

*I plan on going more in depth on these individual topics in future posts..

But for now, here's where YOU can start:

(The following information was ascertained from my coursework with the Pachamama Alliance.

I highly recommend checking them out yourself.)

"Suggestions For How to Be and What to Do in These Times"

Pachamama Alliance Short List

● Ground yourself in nature &indigenous wisdom

● Whenever possible look for areas where your actions can strike at the root of systemic oppression and/or climate destruction

● Engage in Noble Resistance to protect people and the planet

● Take a stand/make a commitment/operate from intention

● Listen deeply to others, recognizing that you can be a source of inspiration, light, possibility and encouragement

● Develop a daily and weekly practice that keeps you on your path

● Collaborate with a community that supports you and keeps you in action

From Robert Reich

● Support your Congress people to oppose repressive political agendas

● March and demonstrate

● Boycott products

● Write Letters to the Editors

● Write Op-Ed pieces

● Use social media

● Visit websites with up to date daily bulletins on what actions people are taking

● Investigative journalism

● Lawsuits

● Coordinated fundraising

● Symbolic opposition

● Intellectual opposition

From The Love Army

● Stand with the most vulnerable

● Listen with empathy

● Act on love, not hate

From Stephen Dinan, CEO of the Shift Network

● Call your Senators and Representatives regularly on each issue that arises. Calling is much more effective than emailing. I recommend FCNL (Friends Committee for National Legislation) for lobbying training. We need to work the levers of our democracy actively. The Sixty Five is a good resource for weekly actions and scripts.

● Create a local circle of allies that acts as a support for information and action.

● Go to public protests and sign petitions to create a sense of safety for all who are standing up. Stand up for people NOT like you who might be under attack at the moment. The bigger the tent and the more people under it, the more safety for all.

● Get VERY informed, which requires a lot of reading and digging beneath the surface stories. Get on multiple lists to track different sources. This helps us not just react to the problem of the moment but to think strategically.

● Spread key stories rapidly to friends and allies.

● Deepen your spiritual practices to find joy, love, and even laughter in the midst of the chaos, and do your best not to demonize anyone involved — instead taking sober, sacred action born out of fierce compassion. It’s important not to lose your center and become overwhelmed by fear.

● Donate to key defense organizations like the ACLU that can help protect our liberties.

● Divest from banks and financial institutions that are supporting and benefiting from destructive projects such as the Dakota Access Pipeline.

● Switch to solar and renewable energy a s fast as possible and only do business with conscious companies that are taking a stand for healthy democracy. This is important to reduce the negative influence of corporations on politics.

Also, in lieu of Robert Reich's suggestion, here is an incredibly inspiring story of CHILDREN coming together to sue the United States government over climate change.

It is so, so paramount to change the direction we are heading for the sake of all life on this planet- human life, plant life, animal life. Now more than ever we need to be mindful of the ways in which we can live in harmony with nature.

If after reading through all of this, you still do not know where to exert your energy or attention- please reach out to me. I would love the opportunity to connect you with an organization that suits your cause. Email iamindigowild@gmail.com with any inquiries.

Love &light,
